Top 5 Ways to Give Back Without Ever Leaving Your Desk

deskchair

In honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday- and all the hard work that goes into preparing for it- we’ve come up with 5 websites that can quickly and easily help you give back to the community without ever leaving your computer chair.

  1. www.freerice.com
FreeRice is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. For every trivia question that you answer correctly on the website, 10 grains of rice is donated to hungry people around the world. While that may seem like a relatively small amount, it’s important to remember that while you are playing, so are thousands of other people. In 2008 alone, 43,942,622,700 grains of rice were donated by sponsors who advertise on the site. Trivia questions range from vocabulary to math and art history, so test out your skills for a good cause!
  2. www.blackle.com
“Blackle” is essentially the same as Google, but with a black background. Why does this make a difference? Because a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen. Blackle is powered by Google and will give you the same exact results, although it does not allow for image searches. By setting www.blackle.com as your home page, you can save a little bit of energy every time your browser loads.
  3. www.oxfam.org
Oxfam International is a group of organizations that work together to eradicate poverty and combat injustice. You can do your part by simply entering your name, address, and email to sign petitions that urge world leaders to listen to the voices of people around the world on topics like the crisis in Darfur and natural disaster relief. You can also opt to save your information so that you only need to enter your email upon future visits, and it won’t cause you to get any junk mail. This is a very quick and simple step to take that could make a difference in the lives of many.
  4. www.firstgiving.com
Firstgiving allows you to create your own fundraising page to raise money for any nonprofit organization. You can email your webpage to friends, family and colleagues, who donate by credit or debit card in an easy, secure online transaction. Firstgiving will send all the donations to the registered non-profit of your choice, minus a small transaction fee that covers the cost of support, secure hosting and money transfers.
  5. Donate to a local charity or organization
Here are a few websites of Philadelphia-based charities and non-profits that accept credit card donations online:

Technology Spotlight: SEPTA Launches New Website Design

septa websiteEarlier this week SEPTA unveiled a new website design with a cleaner layout and a focus on new technology, implementing features such as a real-time train ticker, RSS feeds, and twitter updates. Among the new features is the option to plan your trip using Google Transit, where you can easily switch between using public transportation, walking, or driving to determine the best way to reach your destination.

There is one problem though- it seems that many links still revert back to the old design, meaning that the transition is far from complete. In any case it’s good to see that SEPTA is taking a step (or, baby steps) in the right direction, and we look forward to future improvements. Check out the site at www.septa.org, and tell us your opinion in the comments below!

Word of the Month: HTTP

HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol, and you probably recognize it from the beginning of most links you visit. It is basically a language that allows information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients.

Sometimes you may notice an “S” at the end, which stands for secure. If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://. If it doesn’t, don’t enter any sensitive information, especially a credit card or social security number! In modern web browsers, the information bar will also turn green to alert you that you are on a secure connection.

Top 5 Benefits of Windows 7

  1. windows7New Taskbar
This is one of the most visible changes in Windows 7. The Quick Launch toolbar is gone. A user can now ‘pin’ applications to the toolbar (Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are here by default). Applications are now launched and managed from the toolbar. All open windows of a given application will be grouped together under a single icon. A user can simply hover over this icon to get a thumbnail sized live look-in to each window, a feature known as “Aero Peek”.  While this may take some getting used to, we really like that it organizes windows better and allows a user to change applications more quickly and easily.
  2. Device Recognition
One of the biggest knocks on Windows Vista pertained to hardware compatibility issues. Simply put, often times if you plugged something in (a printer, external hard drive, cell phone) the computer could not communicate with these devices without installing additional software. Windows 7 comes preinstalled with a large number of drivers and can automatically search for new ones via Windows Update.
  3. Less Restrictive
Thanks to new customizable and controllable settings, Windows 7 features fewer pop-up notifications and permissions windows. Windows 7 also utilizes the “Action Center” to centralize messages pertaining to security status, Windows Update, and User Access Control.
  4. Problem Steps Recorder
Have you ever experienced a problem on your computer and when you call Orbis for assistance, the problem seems to have gone away? With the new “Problem Steps Recorder” this will be a thing of the past. Simply open up this program and click record and try to perform the troublesome task again.  Everything you do can be tracked with screenshots to assist a technical support representative in troubleshooting your issue.
  5. Aero Snap & Aero Shake
These are a couple of the cooler new features of Windows 7. “Aero Snap” allows a user to take an open window and drag it to one side of the screen and ‘snap’ it to take up half of the screen. Doing this with multiple Microsoft Word documents for example would allow you to view two open documents side-by-side.

“Aero Shake” allows a user to grab an open window and ‘shake’ the mouse back and forth, doing so hides all other opened windows except the one selected.  Shaking the mouse again restores all hidden windows.  As monitors continue to grow in size and users transition into having multiple windows open at one time, we see these features being a convenient way to organize your work.

Technology Spotlight: How TV Strike Zones Work

kzoneAs the Phillies prepare to make another run at the World Series, TVs throughout the Delaware Valley will no doubt be tuning in to follow along. One thing viewers can expect to see shortly after a close pitch to the plate is an animated graphic depicting the strike zone and if the given pitch was ‘in fact’ a ball or a strike. The Emmy Award winning system known as KZone was first developed for ESPN in 2001 by Sportsvision Inc., it is now used by numerous other networks as well.

The technology behind the system is actually quite complex. Due to varying heights and batting stances of players, the strike zone is not the same for every batter. As a player places his front foot down in the batter’s box to take his stance, a KZone technician ‘sets’ the strike zone based on his position in the box and his height. Special ‘sensor’ cameras are mounted in center field, high above home plate, and down the first and third base lines. These cameras, which are not used for video broadcasting purposes, track the pitch as it crosses over the plate. The data from the cameras is sent to four computers running a sophisticated algorithm which compares the pre-set strike zone and the location of each pitch. This data is then used to generate the three dimensional image which we see on television. Sportsvision claims that the system is accurate to within 2/5ths of an inch.

Currently the system is used only for entertainment purposes. Both baseball officials and purists agree that computers will not replace the human umpires anytime soon. As professional sports integrate technology into officiating more and more, one can only wonder if it is simply a matter of time before fans at home will be yelling at KZone and not the man in blue.

Word of the Month: “64-Bit”

If you’ve gone PC shopping lately, you’ve probably noticed more computers with 64-bit processors, and you may have wondered what advantages they offer.

Put simply, a 64-bit PC can handle larger amounts of information than a 32-bit system. Since it can use more RAM—4 GB and up—a 64-bit computer can be more responsive when you’re running lots of programs at once and switching between them frequently.

Windows 7 is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Most programs designed for computers running 32-bit versions of Windows will work on a computer running the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs and hardware drivers.

Latest Phishing Scam

phishing

BBC News has reported that over 30,000 email addresses and their passwords have been posted online over the past few days, and that number is growing. The information was obtained via a phishing scam, which incorporates the use of fake websites to lure unsuspecting customers into divulging sensitive information, in this case, names and passwords for their email accounts. The first reports believed that only Hotmail user accounts were published, but now it has been confirmed that other providers, including Comcast, Earthlink, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and others are included. Some of the email accounts appear to be old, unused or fake, but many are genuine. Since the issue was publicized, the website on which this information was posted was temporarily down while changes were made and filters were implemented to prevent this issue from reoccurring.

Now is a better time than ever to take a lesson from this scam by changing passwords, keeping antivirus software up to date, and being extra careful when clicking on links within email messages, even with trusted sources in your contacts, as their accounts may have been affected by the scam. If you are still leery about clicking on a link, it’s not a bad idea to verify with the email sender that they sent you the link before clicking on it, and be cautious about entering sensitive information afterwards. Contact Orbis today if you have any questions about antivirus software.

Produce Market Progress

caption captionA lot is happening on the construction site of the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market which is on schedule for completion in August of 2010. We will be opening an office there as well, so it is very exciting to walk around and see the progress. The new market is 1/4 mile long and the footprint of the building is almost 22 acres. It will be the most technologically advanced wholesale market in the world and we are very honored to be involved with the building systems design.

Stay tuned for more updates as the construction progresses.
