Top Secret – SCIF Tents

President Obama using a SCIF tent from a hotel room in Brazil.

Ever wish you had more privacy to make a personal phone call on the run? We’ve all been there.

Imagine what kind of privacy would be needed if you were talking to foreign dignitaries or military personnel about top secret military operations, like the recent one in Pakistan? For moments like that, President Obama, like presidents before him, relies on a special enclosure called a SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities) tent. Made from a top secret material, this otherwise humble looking fabric prevents electronic transmissions from entering or exiting the area, and can be erected anywhere the president and his advisors need it.

The tent is surrounded by a ring of electronic waves, designed to scramble communications inside the tent from being heard outside by a listening device or an eavesdropper. All communication is secure, encrypted, and relayed from fiber optics in the tent to secure satellites. Though the specifications are classified, SCIFs are mandated to be totally soundproof and possess an “Intrusion Detection System” to detect break-ins.

The president’s SCIF is guarded at all times, and can require a combination of pin numbers, access badges, and biometric data to gain entry. For more information, click here. [BBC via Gizmodo]

Credit card processing coming to PA Farmers’ Markets

Credit Card ProcessingAs May approaches and the weather gets warmer, Philadelphia’s farmers’ markets are getting ready to open. Through a federal stimulus grant, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will be able to offer 145 wireless payment card readers to allow farm stands to accept federal and state food access cards, as well as credit and debit cards. Farmers Markets are a great way to get fresh local food; hopefully these new card readers make their way to some of the markets in Philly.

From time to time, Orbis has customers that wish to pay with their credit or debit card, but it’s not really a big part of our business. Still, we like being able to offer this convenience to our customers. Unfortunately, the process is way more complicated than it needs to be. The website used to process payments is confusing. We get charged three different monthly fees which seem to vary every month. We pay different rates depending on the type of card.

As a possible solution, we’ve opened an account with Square, a company started by one of the founders of Twitter. They’re sending us a free card reader that plugs into an iPhone and allows us to accept all credit cards with a flat percentage fee and no contract. Sounds good, I guess we’ll see how well it works. Anyone out there have any experience with Square?

And we’re back…

Those of you that follow us on Twitter (and there are at least a dozen of you) know that we are in the beginning stages of a renewed social media effort. Our initial attempts at using Facebook, Twitter and blogging as a company were, well, not great. To be honest, I don’t know that we ever fully embraced social media, and when things got busy in the office it was always the first thing to be left behind.

But the original reasons for us to blog, tweet, youface, pholo, fingertag, etc. remain — it’s a great way for us to connect with our customers. So we are officially rebooting our social media effort. In the coming days and weeks you can expect to hear about cool new products and services, links to interesting articles, and general updates about what’s happening at Orbis. Most importantly, we want this to be a conversation. Tell us how we’re doing — are our tweets the highlight of your day? Are our blog posts unbearably boring? We want to hear from you.
