In April 2012, FaceBook acquired Instagram for $1 billion. Originally, Instagram was developed for users to “capture, edit, and share the World’s Moments” via pictures, however, on June 21, 2013, Instagram unveiled its 4.0 update. Among the small bug fixes, this update introduces a 15 second video recording feature allowing users to add videos to their profile. This new feature is FaceBook’s response to the recent success of Twitter’s Vine application. Vine allows users to post six second videos that loop on a Twitter-like feed and has amassed over 13 million users. Therefore, FaceBook decided to delve into the video sharing market. In addition to the longer video length, there are 13 new filters presented and user selected cover images for the video.

FaceBook’s move appears to have made a larger impact than many had predicted as Topsy’s Analytics show an increase in Instagram posts and a decline in Vine posts since the launch.

The Orbis Team decided to take a stab at it…

According to a study at the Jaume I University in Castellón, just under 29% of the population of people aged 16 – 30 read online or conventional newspapers daily. The study also found that three out of every four individuals within this age bracket turn to social networking sites for information, even more so than they go to the television for news.
In the past decade, there has been a large drop-off in readership of printed newspapers, especially among the younger demographics, which is rapidly decreasing. The study shows that almost 75% of those aged 16-30 use social networks to stay informed, a larger number than those even watching news on the television.
If the trends continue, newspapers face not only a lost audience, but also the inability to capture the next generation.
News outlets have turned to the Internet to get the word out, but that also comes at a cost. Even though study participants lived in different cities and had differing levels of education, they overwhelmingly refused to pay to access current news. Only 6.2% said they would be willing to subscribe to a media source. Furthermore, over 76% said they would visit a free website if their site of choice began to charge for content. Overall, only 17.1% said they would discontinue Internet use for news altogether if there were no free means.
These statistics show that even the new business model of offering content online at a charge will need to adapt in order to flourish in the digital age. The aforementioned age group does take an interest in staying informed, however, but the study just helps further the understanding that news is a public service that must always be available for free whenever the reader wants.
As far as gender goes, men lean towards journalistic information more than women. They tend to consult a high number of sources and are more inclined to pay for news content. Women put more value on the importance of being well-informed in order to be good citizens.
The researcher suggests that newspapers find strategies to reconnect with young people. While they are interested in news, they aren’t inclined to use information that doesn’t respond to their needs and interests. It also suggests that journalistic media heavily adopt social network use to reach out to the youth, especially since this is how most of them get their information. Without adapting strategies to meet the consumption habits or news conceptions of young people, journalistic media will see their business models fail in the near future, and will possibly disappear altogether.

In today’s day and age, many of our most precious memories only exist online, in the form of photographs. Many of those photos are spread out along various social networks, making it difficult to keep track of them all. An Amsterdam-based company called PastBook has emerged to try and help share memories for generations to come. PastBook is trying to make it easy to combine your photographic memories both online, and in tactile form. If you visit their website, you can see options to create an online book, which can be browsed online or download as a PDF, but you also have the ability to turn the online book into a professionally printed copy.
Instagram is the first social network that PastBook will launch, and Facebook will follow suit. In addition to viewing a hard or online copy of your photos, comments and ‘likes’ on your photos can be included “in bid to make users’ memories more vivid”, says the company. Not only can you create a PastBook for yourself, the app also incorporates a user’s social graph, allowing you to easily create PastBooks as gifts for friends. Eventually, the goal is to support all main photo sharing social networks, including Flickr and Twitter. While several other apps to print your online photos into a physical book already exist, PastBook says it is different because, not only does it go beyond just printing, but it is not simply trying to create “another timeline” in the cloud. PastBook has just recently raised $250K with some help from investors to help further their goals, so only time will tell how successful they will become. In the meantime, try it out, it’s free!

This Friday will mark the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. While the Olympics have always symbolized traditions of the past, it will be exciting to see how technology impacts this years’ competition.

Timing is crucial during the Olympics. Just think of the 100m dash — a fraction of a second is the difference between the gold, silver or no medal at all. Omega is the official timekeeper of the London 2012 Olympic Games, providing scoreboards, countdowns and some new timing technologies that will allow for more data-crunching than ever before. One such technology, The Quantum Timer, can simultaneously compare 16 competitors at once with accuracy down to one-millionth of a second.

With advanced timing comes advanced analytics. This is the first year that data from all 26 Olympic events will be fed to Atos’ Commentator Information System (CIS.) Results from Omega are relayed to CIS in less than a second, which are instantly shared with Olympic officials, broadcasters around the world, press agencies, etc. In addition to the competitive results, CIS takes into account the many factors that can affect who gets the gold- athlete information, weather, event schedules and more. Atos predicts a 30% increase in data captured at the 2012 London Games compared to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Another way technology is playing a role in the 2012 Games is through social media. You can stay up to date on Olympic happenings with Twitter, Facebook and Olympic websites (London2012.com, Olympic.org, NBCOlympics.com.) If Olympic athletes are social media gold, then the Olympic Hub is the jackpot. Find out which athletes have the most followers on Twitter, learn about featured athletes from around the world and get the latest Olympic updates.

But wait, there’s more! Follow #London2012 on Twitter to get a live feed of the Opening Ceremony this Friday. Wondering where the Olympic torch is right now? You can find out on Twitter by searching for #London2012TorchRelay for the latest.

How will you stay connected during the #London2012 games?

On April 9, Facebook announced a deal made with Instagram. Instagram agreed to be purchased by the social network for $1 billion, which will happen late in this quarter. The mobile photo-sharing app, Instagram, was recently valued at $500 million. So why did Facebook pay so much?

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding this pricey purchase. Instagram is a huge success and has a quickly growing user base of die-hard fans. But does it make money? And how will it help Facebook?

Instagram’s simple, direct nature embodies the features Facebook lacks. Instagram is a mobile success and users love it. While people certainly use Facebook on their smartphones, mobile facebooking does not evoke the same joy that millions of users achieve by snapping a photo with Instagram. Facebook is part of the daily routine. Instagram represents something a bit more creative and spontaneous. Photo effects and filters add a whimsical charm to every-day happenings. Instagram brings another layer to the experience of being an impromptu photographer.

Perhaps Facebook saw Instagram as a rising competitor. Or, Facebook could have recognized the appeal of the photo-sharing app to other social networking sites, i.e. Google +. Instagram currently does not have a Google+ share button and it seems like it will not be adding one anytime soon.

When it comes down to it, photos are key to Facebook. Kara Swisher of allthingsD.com explains just how important they are:

Photos are what allowed Facebook to grow so quickly and what made it more than just a blue sea of text and links to consumers. Its new Timeline depends on big, pretty photos, and Facebook even recently announced that it would allow full-screen viewing of high-resolution photos on its Web site, a pricey endeavor.

Over 250 million photos are uploaded to Facebook every day. And Facebook owns them all! Add Instagram to this equation (photos originating from smartphones, another technology on the rise) and the results are pretty powerful.

When the news first broke that Facebook bought Instagram, there was an outcry from Instagram users promising to delete their accounts. Despite this outcry, Instagram catapulted to the top spot in the App Store for the first time ever. This social media marriage has spread awareness for Instagram. Regardless of the motive behind Facebook’s acquisition, it’s clear that social sharing will largely remain in the hands of Facebook.

Communication through Facebook and Twitter has the ability to spread like wildfire. Within seconds, a message can be seen far and wide. Real-time reporting of this nature is powerful stuff. When put into the hands of the people, is instant communication used for good?

Examples of both positive and negative use of social media surround the recent London riots. Some British citizens broadcasted messages on Twitter and Facebook to encourage destruction and riots in their hometown. Other locals sent messages to organize clean up crews.

In a backlash to social media overload came another powerful medium- handwritten notes. Post-it notes expressing hope for the future appeared on destructed property around Britain. People were upset that their neighborhood coffeeshop/ boutique/pub fell victim to the riots.

So what is an appropriate response for too much looting? Clean up crews and brooms. Too much social media?

Be careful of what you “like” on Facebook- you may become the spokesperson! For many people, social media sites have become part of the daily routine. While social media is often thought of as a fun way to communicate with friends, be wary of what you are sharing and what your privacy settings are. Facebook and LinkedIn use “social ads,” which show your image and name promoting a third party. For instance, if you “like” Starbucks you may pop up on a friend’s page in an effort to promote the consumption of lattes. Luckily, we all have rights that can be exercised through our privacy settings. To find out how to opt out of “social ads” on Facebook and LinkedIn, check out these two articles:
